Lawmaker says lower tax breaks to oil and gas

Rep. Brian Egolf, D-Santa Fe, just proposed an amendment that brought groans from the GOP side of the House chamber.

The proposed amendment would make the adoption of the $45 million payout to film industry in any one year contingent on the state’s reduction to the same level — $45 million — of the amount of tax breaks New Mexico gives each year to the oil and gas industry.

“If the time has come for an industry to stand on its two feet, let’s have that discussion,” said Egolf said. “This is about fairness”
